How to negotiate a hospital bill

You do not need a law degree. You need the itemized bill, a short list of shaky charges, and a letter that asks for a specific reduction.

Start with the itemized statement

The summary bill is a poor tool for medical bill negotiation. Ask the hospital for the itemized version if you only have a total. Then upload the hospital bill. PDF exports from a patient portal work well. A clear photo of each page works too.

Read the flags before you call

We look for the patterns that make a hospital bill too high: a duplicate charge, an upcoded visit, an unbundled lab panel, a cancelled test that was never taken off. Each flag has a dollar amount so you can talk about a number, not a feeling.

Ask for a reduction in writing

Phone calls get forgotten. A medical bill dispute letter gives the billing office something to attach to your account. The paid package writes that letter from the flags on your review. If you want the longer version of common questions, the FAQ covers free negotiation, overcharges, and what to say when the first answer is no.

What this is not

This is a medical bill review service and a writing aid. It is not a law firm, a collection agency, or a guarantee. Hospitals can say no. Many do reduce bills when the line items are specific.
